Qualities of a Leader

The Illinois Association of School Boards will be assisting the District 100 School Board in a full search to replace outgoing Superintendent Patricia Wernet who submitted her resignation as of June 2008. I have been asked to be a part of a focus group to consider what qualities our community is looking for in an educational leader. The focus group will be meeting with the IASB on Jan. 30th. I thought I would bring along your input.

What would YOU like to see in an educational leader?

Briefly, I think a good educational leader:

- fosters communication from the bottom up, engaging in reflective dialogue with teachers, parents, board members and students, rather than issuing top-down directives

- works in a spirit of collaboration rather than competition, and does not pit schools, principals or teachers against one another

- reaches out to the community, actively engaging community members in the search for potential solutions when conflicts or problems arise

- has a broad and imaginative conception of childhood education that encompasses but is not limited to academic skills

- demonstrates the qualities parents wish to see their children exhibit: is creative, confident, kind, respectful, responsible, honest and reflective.
